Continued Motivation

I didn’t need to learn to walk again because I have been walking all my life. But, what I do need is motivation to keep walking everyday. I need to prioritize my own well-being so that I can be a better example to my future students and family. I spent the past week looking for motivating articles and videos to keep me going. Here is a look at what I found!

The first article I focused on had 4 science backed ways to motivate me. They were:

  1. Reward yourself
  2. Sign a commitment contract
  3. Rethink positive thinking
  4. Find your fitness tribe

As motivation to keep exercising, I embraced the 4 techniques. I chose to reward myself with a salon treatment after completing 21 days. I am committed to blogging about my success, so I feel that this in a way is my contract. I am committed to rethinking positive thinking. Lastly, I have recruited some friends as accountability partners along this journey. Looking forward to next weeks successes!

Day 18 – May 27

Committed to another 5:00 am start. Great day cause I reached my goal!

Day 19 – May 28

Woke up again at 4:30 to reach all my 10000 step goal because today I will get my Covid-19 vaccine. If I have a reaction I want to rest knowing that I got all my steps in!

Day 21 – May 30

Back at it this morning! Walked all my steps early today just so I could make this post! Feels great to have walked my steps so early in the day. I am noticing that my mental health has improved, my sleeping is better and my clothes are fitting better as well. Winning on more than one level and it feels great! Won’t you join me in walking 10000 steps a day too?

Tweedle Dee – Twitter Dum

I am not a fan of social media. I actually was very proud of myself for not having any accounts! But, for the purpose of my EDTC300 class here goes. I will try Twitter @MGuderyan

Twitter is a bit overwhelming at first. I wasn’t sure at all what I was doing! I watched a video to help me get going.

In my first week on Twitter I found some great hashtags to follow. I am beginning to realize that this can be used as a great resource for me as a future educator. I am enjoying the process of searching and hunting for fellow educators with the same passions as I have.

P.S.

Thank you Katia for the mid semester review! Apparently I missed this post!!

The Price we Pay

What is the price we pay for our participatory culture? The internet has changed the way we communicate, socialize, and educate our youth. It has changed our lives, but at what expense?

As Michael Wesch sheds light in his lecture, he says that media is mediating human relations because when media changes, that is when human relationships change. He even suggests that we are going to have to rethink “ourselves”.

There are a lot of positive outcomes from internet use. A lot of touching, heart-warming stories that could have only had a positive ending because of the internet. But, the flip side is all the harm that it continues to cause. (privacy issues, exploitation, stalking, bullying)

I believe as educators we have a responsibility to educate our youth of the potential dangers. Parents and youth can be informed through symposiums. If we strengthen the families and allow opportunities for opening communication then hopefully risks can be mitigated.

A habit forms in how many days?!?

Day 14 – May 23

If I don’t walk in the morning it seems like I don’t get all my steps in. It was my day off today and I allowed myself to sleep in. I got most of my steps from today taking my son to a Par 3 in Regina. Hoping to do better tomorrow!

Day 15 – May 24

Yay!! Feels great when I accomplish the goal that I set out for myself. I didn’t get up early today because I had the Stat off but I did walk on my treadmill. I feel less guilty watching Netflix while I walk….a little silver lining!

Day 16 – May 25

Back to work today so up at 5:00 again. I don’t enjoy waking up early but once I am up I feel proud that I have accomplished my steps so early. I walk for approximately 6500-7000 steps in the early morning.

Day 17 – May 26

A habit forms in how many days? Looking forward to the new changes in my life. Just taking it one step at a time!

Flipgrid where have you been all my life

Absolutely love Flipgrid. I will definitely use this tool in my future classroom for my students to create video feedback on books or short stories that they will read. I love how this creates an environment of connectedness.

The sign up is free and easy to do!

Flipgrid is a social learning platform that allows educators to ask a question so that the students can record a response in a video format.

I have created a topic that relates to my learning project. I am asking the question “How many steps do you walk in a day?” My students will respond with a quick video answering the question.

I created a short video showing my future students the type of response that I would be looking for. You can use the QR code to access the video.

Looking forward to using Flipgrid in my future classroom because it would fall in the category of Modification on the SAMR model.

Gaining momentum

Day 7 – May 16

Last week I struggled to get my steps in and I found myself scrambling in the evenings. This created a lot of stress for me. So, this week I am committed to getting up at 5:00 am to walk an hour before work. I also started out the week with tips to keep me motivated!

Day 8 – May 17

Not enjoying the 5:00 am mornings! BUT, I am feeling like I am gaining momentum. I am seeing improvements in my mental health, I have more energy during the day, and I am sleeping better at nights.

Day 9 – May 18

Getting out of bed at 5:00 am is getting a little easier! My legs are hurting less and I am looking forward to the benefits of walking everyday!

Day 10 – May 19

I am enjoying using my Pedometer App. It is free and counts my steps accurately. I am still finding success in getting up at 5 am. Feeling more productive in my days!

Day 11 – May 20

Spent time today learning about the power of transformative walking. I have been walking in my basement on my treadmill and now I am feeling empowered to walk outside!

Day 12 – May 21

Today was my day off! SO, I did not get up at 5:00 this morning. This was a mistake for me because I found myself madly trying to get my steps in! I did finally at 11:30 pm. Looking forward to my day off tomorrow.

Day 13 – May 22

Day OFF!

What was i Thinking!

Day 1 – Monday May 10

At 6:00 pm I only had 1275 steps throughout my day!!! Only 8725 more to go. Off I went for a walk with my son, feeling totally empowered to begin my learning project.

After a couple hours of walking I reached my goal of 10,000 steps. The whole time I was walking I was wondering if it was too late to change my project!!

Day 2 – Tuesday May 11

I woke this morning with pain behind my left knee. Seriously doubting my ability to finish this project. I am also so disappointed in myself that I have allowed my exercise ability to decline so rapidly. I walked through the discomfort to reach my step goal!

Day 3 – Wednesday May 12

Still sore and exhausted from Monday! Today was an extremely busy day for me. I allowed my time to get away from me. I found myself not wanting to complete my goal for the day but forced myself to get on my treadmill around 11:00 pm. Apparently, the app I use resets at midnight so today I only walked 9579 steps.

Day 4 – Thursday May 13

Another late night on the treadmill trying to complete my step count. I am not liking how this is feeling. I need to make changes to my schedule so that I can complete my goal before the late evening. I still managed to get my steps in 10254!!

Day 5 – Friday May 14

Had a very busy yet productive day! Managed to complete my steps, 11205, by a reasonable time. I am so looking forward to my day off tomorrow. Feeling like I might complete this project!

Day 6 – Saturday May 15

Day off! Rest day!!

Blog Post #2 – APA and Special Education

This week I signed up to use Feebly. Feebly is a online feed reader that categorizes information from the internet into one awesome place. This makes finding resources and topics of interest very easy.

My 2 favorite resources that I found are:

  1. Special Education: This is important to me because I work within the learning resource environments. I am always looking for new ideas for interaction with all my students.

How to Handle IEPs During the Coronavirus Crisis? Some Expert Advice (edweek.org)

2)Adapted Physical Education: This topic is very important to me because all students need to have their needs met while obtaining meaningful exercise.
